Athens: 10 years European Music Day!! 18-23 June 2009
What womens who travels in Greece should have during summer vacations
- 1 long skirt of scrunchy, naturally wrinkly fabric OR one simple long dress
- 1 pair light-colored heavyweight pants, jeans type but preferably not blue as this still has a 60s "hippie" association which may not be positive in all contexts as well as 1 - 2 cotton trouser
- 1 light sweater
- 1-3 pairs shorts
- 1 - 5 t-shirts
- 1 -2 small skirts especially for the beach or for the night
- 2 -3 good looking tops especially if you are going to visit famous clubs or bars
- 1 -2 Night bags
- 1 -2 good looking dresses for the night
- 1 long-sleeved top; 1 sleeveless top.
- 1 - 2 bathing suits. Take two if you know you will be changing locations a lot; depending on the heat and humidity, they may not dry overnight (ditto underwear!).
- 3-5 pairs underwear, 1-2 bras, and 3-5 pairs socks, depending on how often you expect to be able to wash items and have them dry by your departure time
- 1 oversized T-shirt (for sleeping, beach cover up, etc.)
- 2 pairs shoes - 1 pair good walking shoes, already broken in, and one 'nice' (but still very comfortable and well-soled!) pair for enjoying the nightlife. Tuck socks into the shoes to save space.
- 2 pair sandals. One should be a rubber-bottomed, strap-on, 'swimmable' type to avoid sea anemones and jellyfish when wading along the shore.
- 1 windbreaker or other light, waterproof jacket
- Cosmetics, glasses, hats, anti-sun oil, pepanthol cream

Syros: Hermoupolis Guitar Festival, 16th Festival, July 12 -16 2009
The 16th Festival is almost here!!!! Exciting concerts, interesting classes, valuable workshops....
50 years without Heitor Villa Lobos! A mythic name to guitarists and a composer that wrote music so well … fitted on the guitar.
I remember happy students exploring the fingerboard with the amazing 1st prelude, an introducing piece for many to the wonderful world of music!
16th Guitar Festival this year, so many things to remember…
Festival’s main idea is to combine different things like, music, vacation, learning and relaxing. To present the widest possible musical disciplines through concerts, tuition, ensemble playing, and workshops. And at the same time, to be open to all ages and levels of ability, to performers, teachers, students, and to the audience who loves music.
It’s a risky game, but I think we have made some all these years!Organizing a music festival and being a musician, it’s a dirty job!
But someone had to do it, so… I ‘ll do my best!
Festival Program
Master Class: Every morning, with 3 different professors.
For advanced players
Junior class: Special classes for beginners and intermediate players.
Competition: In various categories.

Mykonos Museums
Aegean Maritime Museum
The Aegean Maritime Museum was founded in 1983 and in 1985 it opened its doors to the public, on the island of Mykonos, as a non-profit organisation. The museum’s mission is to preserve, promote and study the Greek maritime history and tradition, the evolution and activities of the merchant ship, mainly in the historic region of the Aegean Sea.
The Aegean Maritime Museum is in a traditional Mykonian building located at the centre of the Town of Mykonos, in the area of Tria Pigadia
Archaeological Museum of Mykonos
The Archaeological Museum of Mykonos was built in 1902, in order to house the finds from the "Purification Pit" of 426/5 B.C., which was discovered in 1898 on the islet of Rheneia, by D. Stavropoulos.
It was designed by Alexandros Lykakis and paid for by the Ministry of Education and the Archaeological Society of Athens, while the land was donated by the Municipality of Mykonos. The original Neoclassical building assumed its present, "insular" form in 1934, and the large, eastern room, was added in 1972
The exhibition of the museum includes a large number of vases, ranging from the prehistoric to the late Hellenistic period (25th-1st century B.C.), grave statues, stelae and funerary urns from Rheneia, and very few finds from Mykonos.
The museum contains the following collections:
- Funerary statues and grave stelae dating from the 2nd/1st century B.C.,
- Pottery dating from the 25th to the 1st century B.C.,
- Clay figurines dated to the 2nd/1st century B.C.,
- Jewellery and small objects of the 2nd/1st century B.C.

Folklore Museum of Mykonos
Mykonos Folklore Museum is located in the Venetian Castle (also known as Kastro) and was founded on May 1958. The old double stories whitewashed building, of which the museum is part of, is an old house which dates back from the 18th century.
The museum exhibits an impressive collection of folklore items, folk musical instruments, textiles and traditional costumes, and also important pieces of furniture and pieces of sculpture. Important tools, pieces of ceramics, photographs, are also displayed for the visitors.
There is also a large collection of commemorative plates of Greek kings and queens, asl well as samples of embroidery. The Folklore Museum incorporates the Agricultural Museum which is located in Ano Myli. Another branch of the Folk Museum is Lena's House at Tria Pigadia which is located in the Mykonos Town.
Lena’s House is a real middle class Mykonian residence dating from the 19th century. It has a drawing room, two bedrooms and two courtyards with a dovecote. The Agricultural Museum has a collection of old agricultural machinery and tools and includes also the large Boris windmill which dates from the 16th century and functions as well as it did when it was built.

The largest Greek island by area is Crete, located at the southern edge of the Aegean Sea. The second largest island is Euboea, which is separated from the mainland by the 60m-wide Euripus Strait, and is administered as part of the central Greece periphery. After the third and fourth largest Greek Islands, Lesbos and Rhodes, the rest of the islands are two-thirds of the area of Rhodes, or smaller.
The Greek islands are traditionally grouped into the following clusters: The Argo-Saronic Islands in the Saronic gulf near Athens, the Cyclades, a large but dense collection occupying the central part of the Aegean Sea, the North Aegean islands, a loose grouping off the west coast of Turkey, the Dodecanese, another loose collection in the southeast between Crete and Turkey, the Sporades, a small tight group off the coast of Euboea, and the Ionian Islands, located to the west of the mainland in the Ionian Sea (one of these islands, Kythira, is off the southern tip of the mainland, but still considered part of the Ionian Islands).
